Arbor Day’s “roots” in Alabama stretch back to 1887, when Governor Thomas Seay, a veteran of the Civil War Battle of Fort Blakeley, issued the first proclamation for the holiday. Since 1975, Arbor Week has been observed annually in Alabama during the last full week of February (Feb. 18-24 this year). Historic Blakeley State Park is once again honoring the occasion by partnering with the Alabama Forestry Commission to give away tree seedlings. Please stop by the park on Saturday, February 24 to pick up seedlings. Varieties vary from year to year.
