September is National Pain Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the millions of Americans suffering from chronic pain. This annual event was first established in 2001 by the American Chronic Pain Association to educate people about the various types of pain and how to manage it. From physical therapy and mindfulness activities to medication and lifestyle changes, there are many ways to help safely reduce pain levels and improve overall functioning. The public is invited to learn more by attending one of two complimentary lunch and learn events in Baldwin County featuring Dr. Elliott Pennington, fellowship-trained pain management specialist with the Baldwin Bone & Joint orthopaedic team. Dr. Pennington will speak on, “Understanding Chronic Pain – Offering Hope Through Relief and Management Tools.” A native of the Gulf Coast, Pennington earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences and a medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He completed a clinical anesthesia residency and fellowship training in interventional pain medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.
