Join us for a special presentation by noted local author John Sledge, who will discuss his latest book, These Rugged Days: Alabama in the Civil War. Sledge, senior architectural historian with the Mobile Historic Development Commission, is author of several acclaimed books on regional history. Here he provides an accessibly written and riveting account of the Yellowhammer State’s wartime saga focused on the turning points within Alabama’s borders. From secession’s heady early days to its tumultuous end, Sledge highlights the many colorful personalities and pivotal events of the war in the state. These Rugged Days is an enthralling tale of action, courage, pride, and tragedy.
At 9:00 AM that morning, we’ll offer a relaxing narrated cruise along the waters of the scenic Tensaw River exploring the battlefields of Blakeley and Spanish Fort, guardians of the approaches to Civil War Mobile and scene of some of the fiercest fighting during the war in Alabama. Along the cruise, we will also learn about the numerous Confederate and Union warships which vied for control of area waterways and visit the sites of some of the Confederate defensive positions protecting Mobile only accessible by water. Tickets for the cruise, which includes admission to the lecture, are just $27 for adults or $15 for children ages 6-12
