2015 Olympic Day at the United States Sports Academy

DAPHNE, Ala. -  The United States Sports Academy is not only "America's Sports University®"  it is also home to the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA), which houses what is perceived to be the largest collection of sport art in the world. Start the summer off right by joining the Academy and ASAMA for Olympic Day, a worldwide annual celebration in recognition of the Modern Olympic Games. The Academy will offer an open house featuring the Academy's Olympic Art -  a diverse, one-of-a-kind collection. The open house will take place at ASAMA from 9 A.M. -  4 P.M. on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. During the open house, the public may visit the Gallery, Library, and many collections including an outdoor Sport Sculpture Park that features many pieces created by Bruce Larsen, a sculptor from Fairhope. Many of these found-object sculptures are named for great gold medalist Olympians, including sprinter Valeriy Borzov, gymnast Nastia Liukin, and basketball great Michael Jordon. Other ASAMA Olympic materials include the only complete collection of Olympic posters from the 2008 Beijing Olympiad, 10 serigraphs of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games by the late sport artist LeRoy Neiman, Olympic reports and other publications dating back to 1896, and a complete collection of art from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. ASAMA's Olympic Library Room also adds to the ever-growing collection, including medals from the 1988 Seoul Games, Olympic pennants, pins, plates, posters, and stamps. Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the Modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.
