Description
Free Bird & Nature Expo set for October 1 SPANISH FORT, AL – Whether it’s watching a raptor show, going on a pontoon boat cruise, or arts and crafts, there will be something for every age at the upcoming Bird & Nature Expo. The Expo showcases over 30 vendors, including many of the local environmental organizations coming together, a highlight of the 18th annual John L. Borom Alabama Coastal BirdFest, presented by South Alabama Land Trust (SALT). The Expo, set for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9am to 1pm at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center on the Causeway in Spanish Fort, AL, takes place on the last day of the four-day bird and nature festival that attracts participants from across the United States and Canada. The Expo is free and open to the public. Activities and exhibits include the raptor show, touch tanks, live animals, story time, learning about cavity nesting birds, building bird feeders, a guided pontoon tour with a junior birder guide, and more. There will also be food trucks, plus lots of information on birding, native plants, and conservation in general. Follow our Facebook event page at @southalabamalandtrust It’s only fitting that BirdFest should coincide with the launch of SALT’s very own Native Habitat program. The program challenges people to plant native species that encourage biodiversity in their own backyards. In a society accustomed to development practices that remove native vegetation and replace it with exotic plants, we are used to staring at sterile yards. The joy of watching butterflies, birds, and all levels of local ecology unfold before our eyes has been lost, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Be sure to stop by the Expo and learn how you can qualify your own yard, balcony, or greenspace as a SALT Certified Native Habitat and support your local ecosystems and birds to thrive in your own back yard.
