Fairhope’s Arbor Day
Description
Fairhope’s Arbor Day comes a little early this year. “The actual date coincides with Mardi Gras, so we moved our celebration to Saturday, February 11, to make it easier for people to do everything in Fairhope this busy month,” said Jennifer Fidler, Director of Public Works for the City of Fairhope. The event takes place starting at 10am on the Fairhope Faulkner campus.
Along with the always-popular distribution of tree seedings, the day will honor new “treasured tree” award recipients and recognize the 5th grade poster contest winners from Fairhope Elementary and J. Larry Newton.
“Also, we plan to raffle off a few fruit trees, and we expect to have commercial tree vendors there to answer the public’s questions about trees,” Fidler said, adding that the vendors provide drinks and snacks and often hold a giveaway. “New this year, we hope to have a ‘blessing of the trees,’ which will be a nice addition, and, as before, there will be music from the Fairhope High School Jazz Band.
The tree seedling giveaway follows the main program and lasts for about 30 minutes or until supplies are exhausted. This year the list of trees includes: American hornbeam, eastern mayhaw, sassafras, southern red cedar, longleaf pine, flatwoods plum, Nuttall oak, green ash, Dahoon holly, white oak, and bald cypress.
