Mobile Ballet Blends Dance and Dramatic Storytelling in The Little Mermaid Hans Christian Anderson’s magical tale of a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea to gain true love and a human soul…. is re-imagined into a dazzling ballet with original choreography from Katia Garza and powerful score by Antonin Dvorak.
Equal parts theater and dance, The Little Mermaid is much more than a simple ballet adaptation of the Disney animated film. The 1837 story from Danish children’s author Hans Christian Anderson is an intense portrayal of the ability of love to overcome all boundaries. The Little Mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her widowed father (the Sea King), grandmother and older sisters.
When a mermaid turns fifteen, she is permitted to swim to the surface for the first time to glimpse the world above. When her turn at last comes, she rises up to glimpse a birthday celebration held on a ship honoring a handsome prince.
A storm strikes, sinking the ship, and the Little Mermaid saves the prince with whom she’s fallen in love at first sight. She takes him to a temple, where the prince is found by another young woman – never realizing it was the Mermaid who indeed had saved his life.
Her longing for the prince and what she believes is the eternal soul of a mortal sends her to the Sea Witch… and a bargain that provides the legs she needs to seek her true love on land in exchange for her beautiful voice. The rest of the story is one of literature’s favorite triumphs of love. Mobile Ballet’s Corps de Dance will be joined by Guest Artist Paul Branco as The Prince, and Raul Peinado as The Sea King.
Garza’s choreography has been featured by Orlando Ballet, Corpus Christi Concert Ballet and more. Mobile Ballet is excited to share this spellbinding new production journeying from the human realm to a mystical underwater world – with more than a few surprises sure to entrance all ages!
