On July 15, during a Daphne City Council meeting, members scheduled a public hearing for August 19 to discuss the proposed redistricting plan.
This hearing will be held at the start of the scheduled council meeting. Residents are encouraged to attend to express their opinions or ask questions. The proposed redrawn map will be available for viewing a week before the meeting.
The redistricting initiative was introduced during a June 10 work session. Cynthia Feirman of Carey Technology LLC explained the goal is to align each of the seven districts with approximately 3,966 voters, based on census data and projections. Daphne's population was 27,462 according to the 2020 U.S. Census, and the estimated population as of July 1, 2023, is 30,321.
The current proposal, discussed during the work session, aims to adjust the districts as follows:
- District 1: from 4,928 to 3,814 voters
- District 2: from 3,095 to 4,181 voters
- District 3: from 3,035 to 4,059 voters
- District 4: from 6,487 to 3,809 voters
- District 5: from 3,459 to 3,906 voters
- District 6: from 3,506 to 3,941 voters
- District 7: from 3,010 to 4,049 voters
After finalizing the proposal, another public meeting will be held, followed by a council vote on the new districts. The redistricting must be completed at least three months before the November 2025 general election. Notably, all municipal elections in Alabama were postponed from this November to next year.
