The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performs music from some of the greatest movies of all times in The Best of the Best, Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m., at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre. Movies include Out of Africa, Doctor Zhivago, Cinema Paradiso, The Mission, Jurassic Park, Vertigo, Psycho, Star Trek, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and more. Tickets start at $20, students $10.
“We present some of the greatest movie music ever composed, featuring masterpieces from the 20th and 21st centuries,” MSO Music Director Scott Speck explains. “From the silver screen to the symphonic stage, the MSO takes a hair-raising journey through the film scores that have shaped cinematic history.”
The concert is built around the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Best Movies of All Time and features composers Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Bernard Herrmann from the Golden Age of Hollywood. More recent music geniuses include Maurice Jarre, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith and the immortal John Williams.
Coming up, the MSO offers two more concerts in the 2024-2025 Season: On April 26 and 27, the orchestra is joined by the University of South Alabama Concert Choir, Mobile Opera Chorus and four international soloists for an epic performance of Handel’s Messiah. On May 17 and 18, acclaimed pianist Charlie Albright returns in a concert that features Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
Tickets are $20-$96 and can be purchased online at mobilesymphony.org, by phone at 251-432-2010 or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin Street.
Three-concert discounted season memberships are $70 -$288. Bring a group of 10 or more and receive 20% off your order! Student tickets are $10. Through the MSO Big Red Ticket program sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation and the Figures Foundation, students in grades K-12 can attend any of the season’s six
