Create Unique Patterns in Quilting Workshop Hosted by Eastern Shore Art Center

Create Unique Patterns in Quilting Workshop Hosted by Eastern Shore Art Center

Join Instructor Aaron Sanders Head for an exploration of naturally dyed, hand-pieced quilts! On day 1, participants will learn all about natural dyes. “We’ll explore indigo and shibori techniques to create beautiful patterns on fabric," explains Head. The textiles dyed with unique shades of solid blue on the first day will then be combined with varying fabric scraps to create their quilts on day 2.

On the second day, students will learn the basics of hand-piecing techniques, with a focus on the traditional approach of foundation string piecing. String piecing uses scraps of precious fabric, sewn on a foundation square, to create interesting, polished blocks. After learning these basics, Head will demonstrate a few additional piecing and cutting variations to create a multitude of orientations, blocks and quilt designs.

About the Instructor: Aaron Sanders Head is a Southern textile artist focused on natural dyes and hand-stitching. Aaron explores the intersections of practices of the past with contemporary craft, and the ways that sewing and textile arts can aid in increasing diversity and representation in the creative class. He is based in Greensboro, Alabama where he lives in an 1830s home with his partner, musician Tim Higgins, and two cats, Splenda and Turnip. He maintains an active studio practice and extensive dye garden used in his work.
