Coppelia, is a ballet by French composer Léo Delibes that premiered in Paris on May 2, 1870. The comedic ballet is set in a small village in France, where Dr. Coppélius, the eccentric town doctor, has made a life-size dancing doll named Coppelia. He often sits her on his balcony, positioned to look as if she is reading a book. Coppelia is so lifelike that Franz, a village youth, becomes infatuated with her and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanhilda, with the hopes of attracting Coppelia's attention. The shunned Swahilda, with the help of her friends, devises a plan to show Franz his folly. Swanhilda dresses as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor.
